Tumhein dillagi bhool jani pare gi (English Translation)

1 08 2010

It is a challenging task to translate poetic works from one language to the other. Many a subtlety of the poetic intricacy are lost in the process. I am no poet, but I have often wanted to translate the lyrics of Ustad (Master) Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s greatest hits. This particular hit entitled “You will have to forget all about infatuation…” is a beautiful ghazal that puts into words the pains that often accompany love. I hope the translation will help some folks to enjoy this great song a little better.

Chorus:

Tumhein dillagi bhool jani pare gi
Tumhein dillagi bhool jani pare gi
Muhabbat ki raahon mein aa kar to dekho

You will have to forget all about infatuation…
You will have to forget all about infatuation
Try embarking upon on the journey of love!

Tumhein dillagi bhool jani pare gi
Muhabbat ki raahon mein aa kar to dekho
Tarapne pe mere na phir tum hanso ge
Tarapne pe mere na phir tum hanso ge
Kabhi dil kissi se laga kar to dekho

You will have to forget all about infatuation
Try embarking upon on the journey of love!
You will not mock my suffering then…
You will not mock my suffering then…
When you have tried giving your heart to someone!

Chorus

Honton ke paas aye hansi, kya majaal hai
Dil ka muamla hai koi dillagi nahin

A smile dare not creep upon the lips…
This is a matter of the heart not just an infatuation!

Zakhm pe zakhm kha ke ji
Apne lahoo ke ghont pi
Aah na kar labon ko si
Ishq hai dillagi nahin

Wound upon wound… inflicted
Sip after sip… of your own blood
Let out not a sigh, seal you lips
This is love, not infatuation!

Dil laga kar pata chaley ga tumhein
Aashiqui dillagi nahin hoti

When you have fallen in love you shall see
Love is no infatuation

Kuch khel nahin hai ishq ki laag
Paani na samajh ye aag hai aag

Love is no child’s play
Think of it not as water, this is fire!

Khoon rulaye gi ye lagi dil ki
Khel samjho na dillagi dil ki

It’s make you shed bloody tears…
Don’t think of it as child’s play

Yeh ishq nahin aasaan
Bas itna samajh leejay
Ik aag ka darya hai
Aur doob ke jaana hai

This love is not easy
Think of it this way…
It is a river of fire…
And you must drown to cross!

Wafaaon ki hum se tawaqo nahin hai
Wafaaon ki hum se tawaqo nahin hai
Magar ek baar aazma kar to dekho
Zamanay ko apna bana kar to dekha
Humein bhi tum apna bana kar to dekho

You may not expect me to be faithful
You may not expect me to be faithful
But, you must try me at least once…
You gave yourself to this world…
Now try making me your own!

Khuda ke liya chor do ab yeh parda…

Rukh se naqab utha, ke bari der ho gayi
Mahol ko tilaawat-e-quraan kiye hoye
Khuda ke liye chor do ab yeh parda…

For God’s sake, reveal yourself now…

Lift the veil now, it has been long since
the world broke into recitation of praise…
For God’s sake, reveal yourself now…

Hum na samjhe teri nazron ka taqaza kya hai
Kabhi parda kabhi jalwa yeh tamasha kya hai
Khuda ke liye chor do ab yeh parda…

I couldn’t understand what is the intent of your gaze
Shy this moment, and inviting the next, what is this game?
For God’s sake, reveal yourself now…

Jan-e-jan hum se uljhan nahin dekhi jaati
Khuda ke liye chor do ab yeh parda…

My darling, I cannot bear to see this struggle now
For God’s sake, reveal yourself now…

Khuda ke liya chor do ab yeh parda
Keh hain aaj hum tum nahin ghair koi
Shab-e-wasl bhi hai hijaab iss kadar kyon
Zara rukh se aanchal utha kar to dekho

For God’s sake, reveal yourself now…
For you and I are strangers no more
Why the veil on the night of the union?
Uncover your face and look up now…

Jafaaein buhat kien buhat zulm dhaye
Kabhi ik nigah-e-karam iss taraf bhi
Humesha huay dekh kar mujh ko barham
Kissi din zara muskura kar to dekho

Broke my heart, and tortured me plenty
Perhaps a kind gaze this way now?
Forever my sight offended you
Perhaps direct a smile my way now?

Jo ulfat mein har ek sitam hai gawara
Yeh sab kuch hai paas-e-wafa tum se warna
Satate ho din raat jiss tarha mujh ko
Kissi ghair ko youn sata kar to dekho

In love I have born every wound inflicted
All this is in custody of my sincerity to you
The way that you tease me day and night…
Try to tease another and see!

Agarche kissi baat par woh khafa hain
To acha yehi hai tum apni si kar lo
Woh maanein na mannein yeh marzi hai unki
Magar un ko pur-nam mana kar to dekho

Though she seems upset about something
Perhaps it is better to just move on
To accept me or not, that is her will
But try to convince her with all your passion!

Tumhein dillagi bhool jani pare gi
Muhabbat ki raahon mein aa kar to dekho

You will have to forget all about infatuation
Try embarking upon on the journey of love!

Hey! The translation is complete, though it was an uphill task! The poetic sense of it is tarnished a bit, but I tried my best.

Thanks! There is a lot of very subtle vocabulary in this ghazal, I had not opened the Urdu dictionary so many times in a while! I am glad it is somewhat decent and people like it :)

Great translation thanks!
I was wondering if u could which dictionary you wud recommend for someone of english tongue trying to learn urdu. I would say my understanding of urdu is fairly ok, I understood most of this song without translation but it helped clarify and really want a deeper understanding of the poetry of the language and want to understand some of my other fav songs/poems.
Thank u.

Unfortunately there are not very many good dictionaries. I use Freozsons dictionaries. They are decent but have not been updated for a while.

This is one of my family’s favourites. I used to pester my husband to tell me what the meaning was. He would start off and then after the first line or so falter and say: “My Urdu is not good enough – I can’t translate it – it would destroy everything!”
So I used to only enjoy the beautiful music – until now! And what shall I say, the tears started flowing straight away, I just couldn’t help it.
Thank you very much for all the effort you put in your work of love.
And may the nagging dissatisfaction that you feel with your hard work be the inspiration to somebody else to start studying Urdu or Farsi and experience these musical poems in their original language.

Restlessness of mine you will not then mock…
Restlessness of mine you will not then mock…
Fall in true love with someone then see!

Chorus

Honton ke paas aye hansi, kya majaal hai
Dil ka muamla hai koi dillagi nahin

Smile nears your lips ,how dare that can happen …
This is a matter of the heart not just an infatuation!

Zakhm pe zakhm kha ke ji

Ishq hai dillagi nahin

Live by wound upon wound inflicted
Take Sip after sip of your blood
Let out not a sigh, seal you lips

Living of True Love is no sort of child’s play
Think of it not as water, this is fire its fire!

Khoon rulaye gi ye lagi dil ki
Khel samjho na dillagi dil ki

True love make’s you shed bloody tears…
Don’t apprehend true love as joy

Yeh ishq nahin aasaan
Bas itna samajh leejay
Ik aag ka darya hai
Aur doob ke jaana hai

True love is not Tranquility
Just Understand it this way…
This is alike a river of fire…
And you drown yourself for crossing it!

You have seen this world’s faithfulness…

Kabhi parda kabhi jalwa yeh tamasha kya hai
Khuda ke liye chor do ab yeh parda…

I couldn’t understand what is the intent of your gaze
At times veil, At times Jalwa(powerful presence), what is this spectacle ?
For God’s sake, reveal yourself now…

Jan-e-jan hum se uljhan nahin dekhi jaati
Khuda ke liye chor do ab yeh parda…

My Beloved, I cannot any longer bear this uneasiness
For God’s sake, reveal yourself now…

Khuda ke liya chor do ab yeh parda
Keh hain aaj hum tum nahin ghair koi
Shab-e-wasl bhi hai hijaab iss kadar kyon
Zara rukh se aanchal utha kar to dekho

Jafaaein buhat kien buhat zulm dhaye
Kabhi ik nigah-e-karam iss taraf bhi
Humesha huay dekh kar mujh ko barham
Kissi din zara muskura kar to dekho

Struck my heart, excessively tortured me
Perchance a merciful gaze this way as-well
Forever my sight offended you
At someday just smile at me and see.

Jo ulfat mein har ek sitam hai gawara
Yeh sab kuch hai paas-e-wafa tum se warna
Satate ho din raat jiss tarha mujh ko
Kissi ghair ko youn sata kar to dekho

In love I have born every inflicted wound
All this is in custody of my sincerity to you
The way that you aggravate me day and night…
Just try to agitate a stranger like this and see!

Agarche kissi baat par woh khafa hain
To acha yehi hai tum apni si kar lo
Woh maanein na mannein yeh marzi hai unki
Magar un ko pur-nam mana kar to dekho

Perhaps for a reason they are upset
It is better off for you to just move on
To accept me or not, that is there will
But at-least try to convince them and see!

Tumhein dillagi bhool jani pare gi
Muhabbat ki raahon mein aa kar to dekho

This is from Sufi prose which commonly is mistaken to be meant for a lover. Sufi prose always refers to God; since Sufi’s always searched for enlightenment from the Almighty it is God who they truly love and when the despair it is their pain that they reveal – similar to what the more ‘average’ person would feel towards a sweetheart!

Spirituality takes you a step higher than religion, one would need to give up worldly goods to be closer to the Almighty as Sufi’s seek to and do!

However the listener can choose to interpret this as he/she chooses. The words remain very deep and poetic.

NFAK rest in peace.

Thank you Sajid, I did not translate literally – that would not relay the poetic nature accurately, but your suggestions are welcomed.
